The E&B Performance Health division within our Sports Medicine Center specializes in sport-specific training techniques, injury prevention approaches, and recovery modalities to help athletes of all sports and participation levels to both avoid pain or need for formal physical therapy during frequent training and return to peak performance following physical therapy.
Lightforce Laser Therapy uses therapeutic laser light to reduce pain and inflammation while accelerating tissue repair and recovery. The laser penetrates deep into the tissues, promoting cellular regeneration and improving circulation.
Shockwave Therapy uses high-energy sound waves to treat musculoskeletal conditions, promoting healing by stimulating blood flow and triggering the body’s natural repair processes. It is often used for chronic pain and injuries like tendonitis and plantar fasciitis.
Cupping therapy involves using suction cups to create negative pressure on the skin and underlying tissues, which helps release tension, improve blood flow, and promote healing in tight or overworked muscles.
Dry Needling involves inserting thin needles into trigger points or tight muscle areas to release tension, improve blood flow, and reduce pain. Level 1 focuses on basic techniques, while Level 2 introduces advanced methods and deeper tissues.
Graston Technique uses specialized stainless-steel instruments to apply controlled pressure and “scrape” the skin over injured or tight tissues, breaking down scar tissue and fascial restrictions to improve mobility and decrease pain.
Active Release Techniques (ART) involve manipulating soft tissues with movement to break down scar tissue and adhesions. By combining pressure and specific movements, ART helps restore normal function and relieve pain.
PERT focuses on addressing reflex patterns that contribute to pain and dysfunction. Level 1 teaches fundamental techniques to release primal reflexes, while Level 2 delves deeper into advanced methods for more complex issues.
PRI focuses on restoring balance and alignment in the body, specifically addressing imbalances in breathing mechanics and pelvic positioning. Courses like Myokinematic Restoration, Pelvis Restoration, and Postural Respiration address specific aspects of posture and movement.
KinesioTaping involves applying elastic therapeutic tape to the body to support muscles, improve circulation, reduce swelling, and aid in injury recovery, without restricting movement.
Dynamic Taping uses a specialized, stretchy tape to provide mechanical assistance to muscles and joints, helping to reduce load and aid in injury recovery by mimicking the body’s movements and providing functional support.
Normatec Compression Therapy uses air pressure to massage limbs, enhance circulation, reduce muscle soreness, and accelerate recovery by flushing out metabolic waste and improving blood flow.
Hyperice X combines cold and heat therapy in one device to alternately cool and warm the body, reducing inflammation and promoting faster recovery from muscle or joint injuries.
Hyperice Vibration and Percussion Therapy uses handheld devices that deliver rapid, targeted pulses to muscles, helping to reduce pain, improve flexibility, and promote recovery by increasing blood flow and reducing muscle tension.
Hyperice Venom Therapy combines heat and vibration to deliver soothing relief for muscle stiffness and pain. It is commonly used on the back, shoulders, and legs to relax tight muscles and improve recovery.
Hivamat uses electrostatic oscillation to deeply penetrate tissues, improving lymphatic drainage, reducing swelling, and speeding up the healing process. It is often used for post-injury rehabilitation and managing chronic pain.
Compex Electrical Stimulation uses electrical impulses to stimulate muscles, enhancing strength, endurance, and recovery. It is particularly useful for muscle rehabilitation and reducing soreness after intense exercise.
BFR Training uses controlled bands to restrict blood flow to working muscles during low-intensity exercise, tricking the body into building muscle and strength with less strain while promoting faster recovery.
FMS is a screening tool designed to evaluate fundamental movement patterns, identifying dysfunctions or imbalances that may lead to injury. It provides a baseline for corrective exercise interventions.
SFMA is a comprehensive movement-based diagnostic system that evaluates dysfunctions in patients with pain. It focuses on identifying underlying causes of movement limitations and pain to guide rehabilitation strategies.
FCS is used to assess a person’s ability to perform work-related tasks by evaluating strength, flexibility, balance, and endurance. It helps determine physical readiness and injury risk.
The Y-Balance Screen assesses dynamic balance by measuring how far a person can reach in multiple directions while standing on one leg. It helps identify asymmetries and functional limitations, especially in athletes.
Force Plate Testing measures ground reaction forces during various movements, providing data on balance, power, and asymmetries. It is commonly used in sports performance and rehabilitation settings.
Dynamo Strength Testing measures muscle strength and endurance using specific devices to assess isometric, concentric, and eccentric muscle performance. It provides precise data for rehabilitation and athletic conditioning.
Our performance health team of athletic trainers and specialized physical therapists is led by Jimmy Dorneman MS, ATC, who has over 14 years of experience in D1 college athletics and the NFL. Most recently before assuming his role at E&B, Jimmy served as the Director of Sports Medicine for UofL athletics, overseeing Olympic sports and implementing rehabilitation and testing technology.
Jimmy maintains licensure through the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure as well as having certifications in GRASTON soft tissue mobilizations, Active Release Technique (ART), Functional Movement Screen (FMS), Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA), Functional Capacity Screen (FCS), Y-Balance Screen, Myofascial Decompression (Cupping), Blood Flow Restriction therapy (BFR), Postural Restoration Technique (PRI), Dynamic Taping, Kinesiotaping, IV certification, Dry Needling Level 1&2 certifications, Primal Reflex Release Technique Level 1&2 and American Heart Association CPR/First Aid instructor.
